The EU Cloud CoC anniversary: two years of bridging the gap between GDPR and the cloud industry

SCOPE EuropeEU Cloud CoCNews

Two years ago, after receiving a positive opinion by the European Data Protection Board, the EU Cloud CoC was approved by the Belgian Data Protection Authority, thus becoming the first operational transnational code of conduct under the GDPR.

The journey towards this momentous achievement was paved with diligence, collaboration, and a relentless commitment to safeguarding personal data. The EU Cloud CoC General Assembly alongside SCOPE Europe – as the Code’s Secretariat and Monitoring Body –, worked tirelessly to develop and implement a comprehensive code of conduct that would raise the bar for data processing activities across the European Union.

Since then, the EU Cloud CoC community has experienced continuous growth and today, all stakeholders involved are thrilled to witness the expansion of the Code’s membership, which includes service providers of different sizes and representing various business segments. This growing ecosystem plays a vital role in broadening the adoption of cloud computing and, therefore, in enabling a wider portion of the European economy to benefit from this key technology.

Navigating the landscape of data protection and privacy regulations is no easy feat. Understanding the intricacies of GDPR and ensuring compliance require substantial investments of both time and resources. The EU Cloud CoC has been proven to aid adherent companies by meeting these challenges head-on. As a result, more than 1.250 services proudly wear the EU Cloud CoC compliance mark.

However, as data-related concerns transcend EU borders, our work also goes beyond them. During the past two years, we have been developing the Third Country Data Transfers Module, which once approved, will significantly help cloud providers with their international data transferring. Additionally, we have been working on a UK-specific on-top module, which is poised to embark on the approval process in the near future.

In the meantime, we’ll continue to stay on top of policy changes, engage in meaningful dialogues with the authorities and institutions, as well as nurture the growth of our unique ecosystem. The EU Cloud CoC is an ever-evolving tool, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunities and advancements of the upcoming year.
